Play is a word that is used in a lot of situations. It is said without a specific meaning and yet people are happy that a tacit understanding supports what they mean. It has many levels and over the last century more and more people have liked its depth and versatility. Throughout this essay, I aim to help the reader understand how and why the term 'play' has come to mean more than just children messing about.
